Interface Design
The focus on the users experience and interaction with a web site is what Interface Design is about. It is the interaction, images, and concepts used to convey the function and meaning of the web site. The goal is to make the users interaction as simple and efficient as possible.
There are a few key categories to Interface Design, usability, visualization, functionality and accessability.Usability refers to how easily a web site is navigated and how it is processed. Meaning flow, sequence, instructions, and download time. Visualization refers to designing a web site that is visually interesting and aesthetically pleasing. Making sure to avoiding any design that is potentially distracting or over the top. Like making sure there is a good color scheme, and that certain colors are not popping out more than others. Also, having a good balance of context and visual aids to help draw the user in. They must be both helpful and informational. Too much context or visual aids can distract the user. Functionality refers to the features of a web site and how useful they are for supporting a given task. Last is accessibility, is the web site suitable for users with disabilities? An example being those who are deaf or blind.
Interface design is important because it ties the web site together. If the designer has good Information Architecture but horrible usage, the web site will not work properly. If any of these key concepts are missing, the web site will have set sail to fail. There is nothing worse than a frustrated and confused user trying to navigate around a web site.
